Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that Shkodran Mustafi remains a doubt for Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The German international missed Arsenal’s 4-2 defeat at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon through injury.
However, it had been thought that the centre-back, who is valued at £25.2m by transfermarkt.co.uk, would return to action against Chelsea.
Wenger has confirmed that the 25-year-old is still struggling with the problem ahead of the League Cup fixture, and could again miss out.
Wenger told reporters:
“Mustafi will also have a test today. I don’t know exactly how available they will be. I will know more after training.”
Arsenal currently have real problems at the back, with Nacho Monreal, Sead Kolasinac and Laurent Koscielny all on the sidelines.
Callum Chambers and Rob Holding could start as the two centre-backs if Wenger decides to switch his formation against Chelsea, although Per Mertesacker could also feature for the second match in succession.
Further forward, Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey are still on the sidelines for the Gunners, who desperately need a positive result against Chelsea.
