Aston Villa reporter Gregg Evans labelled midfielder Douglas Luiz ‘terrible’ for his role in Leeds United’s second goal in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
The Lowdown: Luiz’s overall display
The Brazilian, who was heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park last month, made his 17th Premier League start on Wednesday evening.
Luiz played the entirety of the game in a three-man midfield alongside John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey but was the worst-rated performer of the trio.
He made fewer touches than both McGinn and Ramsey and lost possession on 11 occasions, ending with a SofaScore rating of 7.0/10.
The Latest: Evans’ post
With Villa 3-1 up in first-half stoppage time, Luiz stuck a foot out to block Rodrigo’s cross, which could have gone anywhere. Dan James then somehow managed to bundle in a header and halve the deficit going into the interval, with Evans saying this about the goal on Twitter.
“This is some mad game. Terrible defending from Luiz who almost converts into own goal before James bundles home.”
The Verdict: Avoidable
It wasn’t just Luiz who was at fault for James’ second of the game, but it definitely was avoidable. You could argue that Ezri Konsa shouldn’t have allowed Mateusz Klich to backheel a pass into Rodrigo, who lost Philippe Coutinho with a run into the box.
And, with the ball up in the air, it’s still crazy to think that James managed to out-jump Tyrone Mings from less than six yards out.
The goal right before the break gave the visitors hope, but if Villa dealt with the situation better, who knows, they could have run out comfortable winners.
