England beaten by FranceStruggling in Euro 2025 qualifyingToone optimistic Lionesses can bounce backWHAT HAPPENED?
The Lionesses slumped to a surprise 2-1 defeat to France on Friday that leaves the team down in third place in Group A3. Sarina Wiegman''s side sit below France and Sweden and have managed just one win in three games so far. England therefore have plenty of work to do if they are to qualify for next summer's European Championship in Switzerland.

A tough night for England against France also saw the Lionesses lose goalkeeper Mary Earps to a hip injury. The Manchester United star departed in tears after just seven minutes and is potentially set for a spell on the sidelines. Hannah Hampton looks set to take over if Earps is ruled out of their return game against France, with Wiegman knowing England can ill-afford to drop many more points if they are to qualify.
WHAT TOONE SAID
Meanwhile, Toone is feeling confident England can turn their situation around. She told reporters: "As England, we want to win every game that we step into. We know that we’ve got a great team, a great manager and we want to go to the Euros, obviously.
“We won the last one, we want to go there and do the same thing, so right now it hurts a little bit. But we’ve got a few more days until we go again, which is nice because you can always rectify what we didn’t do tonight. We’ve got to make sure that we recover well, learn from the game, but also take a lot of the positives that we have as well.
“We’ve got a squad full of experience and we know what it’s like. We knew this group was really tough, so we can’t dwell on these results, this result tonight, we can’t dwell on it. We’ve got to go again in a few days, so as a team, we’ve got to make sure that we switch our mindset, we recover really well and we learn from the game.”

The Lionesses now head to Saint-Etienne to meet France again on Tuesday. Victory in that game would cut the gap to Les Bleus to just two points.
