According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton have suffered a huge blow with reported target Luke Shaw wanting to fight for his Manchester United place amid links with Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the Daily Mail says that the 22-year-old is ready to reject a move to Turkey during the January transfer window to stay and fight for his place, even though he has found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season.
The Sun reported last month that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino could be keen to be reunited with Shaw – having previously worked with him at Southampton – with the future of Danny Rose still up in the air, while The Mirror reported on November 2 that Saints themselves could be keen if they sell Ryan Bertrand to Manchester City.
The Daily Mail says that the England international could be allowed to leave Old Trafford if a suitable offer arrives, but it seems as though the player is keen to battle to save his Red Devils career.
How has Shaw done this season?
It has been another disastrous campaign for the 22-year-old under Jose Mourinho, and he appears to be the fourth-choice left-back behind Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian right now, with the recovering Marcos Rojo also able to play there.
Shaw has made just two appearances – both in the Carabao Cup and both from the substitutes’ bench – while he hasn’t made the matchday squad for any of United’s 11 Premier League matches so far this term.
Can he really save his United career?
While Mourinho is at the helm you wouldn’t think so, but of course you can never say never.
The Portuguese manager has criticised him in public on more than one occasion and while a move to Turkey may not be tempting, the chance to link up with Pochettino again or get regular game time at Southampton if they sell Bertrand would surely be an opportunity that the 22-year-old couldn’t turn down.
Would he prefer Tottenham or Southampton?
Having waxed lyrical about Pochettino in Guillem Balague’s book about the Argentine, a move to Spurs would probably be Shaw’s preference but if Danny Rose stays then it would be difficult to break past both him and the impressive Ben Davies to get into the team.
Returning to St Mary’s if Bertrand goes would probably be a much better option, and would allow him to rebuild his floundering career with less pressure on his shoulders.
