Reds star picked as a midfielderHas much to learn in engine room roleFoden & Palmer tipped to shineWHAT HAPPENED?
The 25-year-old has earned just 24 senior caps for his country, despite making his debut in June 2018. He has been overlooked at times due to the wealth of options available to the Three Lions at right-back. Alexander-Arnold continues to fill that role at club level for Liverpool, but has been nudged up the park with his country heading into another major tournament.

Alexander-Arnold has impressed through his midfield outings for England, but Harry Redknapp – speaking in association with the free to play fantasy game at that will see him compete with supporters for bragging rights at Euro 2024 this summer – has told GOAL when asked if that is the best position for him: “I haven’t seen enough of him playing in midfield. Midfield is a completely different game to playing right-back. At right-back you have got all of the pitch in front of you – the keeper gets it and throws it out, you have got space and can drop balls in. When you are in midfield, you have got to have eyes in the back of your head. You have to have great awareness of people ambushing you, when the ball comes in – bang, people are pressing from the blind side. It’s a special talent to be a midfield player. Whether he has got that ability to do that at the top level, I’m not sure. Against good opposition, only time will tell. It would be a gamble, I think, to play him in central midfield. Could do it, he’s good on the ball and is a great right-back, but whether he’s got that to play in midfield, I’m not sure.”
FANTASY PICKS
Pressed on who he would consider to the value pick in England’s ranks when it comes to fantasy games, with Alexander-Arnold in that conversation if he does start regularly in the middle of the park, Redknapp added: “Cole Palmer could be a boy that might break into the team. What a season he’s had. What a talent he is – came close to being the top goalscorer in the Premier League this year. [Anthony] Gordon, if he gets in, he has the ability to score and get past people and make opportunities. He could be one that could be useful.”
GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE
A more obvious pick for Southgate and coaches in the virtual realm is Manchester City playmaker Phil Foden, who is entering this summer’s European Championship on the back of Premier League title and FWA Footballer of the Year triumphs. Redknapp said of the talented 24-year-old: “He’s amazing. He’s been the best player this year in the Premier League. But you have got [Jude] Bellingham, you have got Foden, great talent, [Declan] Rice. Cole Palmer at Chelsea, what a player he is. [Eberechi] Eze at Crystal Palace, look how good he has been. He has got great ability. He could play off the left and come in off that side, if you wanted to play Foden in behind [Harry] Kane and be really bold. We have got great attacking options.”
